No. California law allows you to complete your CCW training up to 6 months before submitting your permit application. You don't need to wait. Start your training now and have your certificate ready to submit when you apply.
This is a common point of confusion. It is possible that many municipalities don't want you to waste your time and money if you don't pass the background check. Basic Gun Safety will refund 100% of your money if that happens. Please call us if you aren't sure if you are qualified to carry. Roger recommends getting into a class ASAP so you're not scrambling after your application is approved. Once your application is approved, many municipalities require you to complete the training in only 2-3 weeks. Basic Gun Safety classes are good for 6 months.
Processing times vary by county and application volume. In Orange County and LA County, applicants typically wait 4-6 weeks after submission for a decision. Starting your training early keeps you from losing time.
Since the Supreme Court's 2022 Bruen decision, California must issue permits to qualified applicants regardless of whether they can demonstrate a specific "good cause." The good cause requirement has been removed. If you meet the qualifications, you can apply.
Roger offers a 100% refund of your training fees if your background check does not clear after completing the course. No complicated process — if the background check fails, you get your money back.
Roger's training meets the requirements for Orange County and Los Angeles County Sheriff-issued CCW permits. There are some cities that require their own carry permit. Long Beach, Torrance, and Monterey Park are some examples. If you're applying in a different county, call us first to confirm compatibility — requirements can vary.
As long as your application is submitted to the municipality BEFORE your expiration date, you are good. If your permit expires before you submit the renewal, You restart from scratch — new course, new application, new live scan. Submit early and don't cut it close.
EVEN IF YOUR APPLICATION IS SUBMITTED ON TIME, YOU ARE NOT PERMITTED TO CARRY UNTIL YOU RECIEVE YOUR NEW PERMIT.
At Basic Gun Safety, we want you to retain as much information as possible. In our experience teaching at the University level, we think four hours is about as much as anyone can focus effectively. CCW curriculum is divided into 4 modules of 4 hours each, for a total of 16 hours of initial training. The modular format lets you fit training around your schedule — book one module at a time, on whatever dates are available. You don't have to take a 16-hour block in one weekend.
No. All 4 modules count toward your initial CCW regardless of the order you take them. Register for whichever module has a date that works for you and complete the rest on your own schedule. They just need to all be completed in a 2-month window.
At 4 hours per module, the full initial course is 16 hours. Most students complete it in 2–4 sessions depending on schedule availability and how quickly they want to move.
The 4 modules cover: California firearms laws and legal use of force (including SB2 requirements), practical carry skills and defensive decision-making, shooting fundamentals and SimRange scenario exercises, and live-fire qualification with SB2 compliance documentation. Every module includes simulator time on the LaserShot system.
California CCW renewal requires 8 hours of training. Roger's renewal course covers Modules 1 and 4 — Legal Foundations and Qualification & Compliance. Same instructor, same standard, focused on what the Sheriff requires for renewal.
Orange County allows for some online classes. Other municipalities do not. CA CCW training requires live-fire qualification. Basic Gun Safety does not currently offer online classes. All sessions are conducted at Roger's training facility in Garden Grove. If you need a more flexible online class schedule, we can recommend a great instructor.
Roger is POST Certified — the same standard required of California law enforcement officers. Most civilian CCW instructors are not. He also holds POST Red Dot certification, is an NRA Training Counselor, coached Team USA at the CIOR World Military Championships, holds a Master's in Kinesiology with a focus in Motor Learning, and has taught at the university level. He applies the same methodology used to train competitive and military shooters to civilian CCW instruction.
POST stands for Peace Officer Standards and Training — the California commission that sets training standards for law enforcement. POST Certified Firearms Instructors are qualified to train peace officers. Very few civilian CCW instructors hold this certification.
CIOR is the Interallied Confederation of Reserve Officers — an international military skills competition. Roger competed as an officer while on active duty and coached Team USA at the CIOR World Military Championships, working directly with military personnel on competitive shooting performance. That same coaching methodology transfers directly to CCW and defensive firearms training.
The LaserShot SimRange is a professional-grade firearms simulator used by law enforcement agencies nationwide. Roger's system cost . Students shoot at realistic scenario-based video targets using a laser-modified training firearm. The simulator provides instant feedback on accuracy, reaction time, and decision-making — without live ammunition.
No. The SimRange uses a laser-modified training firearm. You do not need to bring your own weapon for simulator sessions.
No. California requires live-fire qualification for CCW certification. The SimRange is used as a training supplement — it improves your skills and decision-making before and alongside live-fire range sessions.
